Scary Monsters IV: a tangle of figures and faces in green, blue and brown tones around a large raised green hand, on an ochre canvas, work by Robert Bibeau

Scary Monsters V

Broad ribbons of violet and turquoise, outlined in black, wind through a population of beaks and snouts. The flesh-pink ground shows between the figures. At the upper left, a small silhouette with outstretched arms holds the edge of the canvas.

Earlier state

The same canvas, photographed before the final reworkings.

Reading notes

Pellan painted his Bestiaires in oil and India ink, the colour always carried by a black line that holds it in. The same order governs here, applied to a crowd that nothing sorts: the legible creature and the scribble share one rank.
